EPA announced on November 10, 2022, the publication of the final revision of the risk determination for methylene chloride issued under TSCA, in which was determined an unreasonable risk for human health for the substance when evaluated under its conditions of use (COU).

Methylene chloride is a volatile chemical used as a solvent in professional and consumers products, like sealants and adhesive removers. In reason of the unreasonable risks to consumers health and the environment EPA will propose occupational safety measures in the risk management process.

Separately, EPA is conducting a screening-level approach to assess potential risks from the air and water pathways for several chemicals, including methylene chloride. EPA’s findings regarding the chemical-specific application of this screening-level approach will become available in the proposed risk management rule for the substance.
